Cold Case

The Cold Case scene i am going to be discussing in this essay portrays many ideologies on the younger audience and shows how society can influence younger kids and can have big impacts on how they dress and there general attitude to life as star iconography appeals to them and makes them want to convey themselves similarly.

The Tv drama Cold Case, represents many stereotypes and mise en scene’s, the scene I will be analysing represents a young student who seems to be depressed, he is of a ‘emo/rock’ social group and commits, this relates to a specific social group as he carries his own, socialect, dialect and idiolects and demographically relates to a wide audience who can relate to his problems and his iconography. His dark clothes signifies dark emotions and non-caring attitude and how he may not respect his life, he also has long black hair signifying his interest in heavy metal as he makes it obvious to the audience by having that certain style, in one small cut we see a poster of Kurt Cobain portraying an ironic scene as he relates to the students  life as his general interest in that type of music, whereas we know Kurt Cobain also killed himself, almost making the younger generation seem vulnerable to bad influences. Another mise en scene would be the representation the head teacher gives of when patrolling the school, this scene signifies a whole bunch of stereotypes and different social classes, by cutting scene from pupil to pupil and representing them in their typical environment. For example many stereotypes are portrayed in this scene ranging from outcasts of society to the ‘popular kids’.

The Tv Drama scene also uses key concepts such as sound to make the clip more understandable and to give it a sense of recognition and to relate to what’s happening in the scene. Cold Case starts off with a rock music, therefore relating to the main character who is heavily indulged with the theme of rock, which also lets the audience know the stereotyped ‘heavy rock’ teenager, the music is fast paced and very loud, making the audience feel the lack of attention to the main character as it shows the busy school and portrays the main character being alone, standing by himself, yet again showing us how he may be stereotyped as an ‘emo’ due to the lack of his social skills and how he’d rather be alone. In the second part of the clip, the music begins to slow down as this is the part of the clip as this is where the young kid commits suicide and kill himself the music slows down to show the emotions and begins to get quiet to convey the effect of a funeral and how everyone is upset however rock music is still playing representing how bigger part of his life was revolved around music. The music then ends yet again loudly but resumes with the theme tune, creating an eerie feel as the series is a police detective themed program, usually to do with crimes and death.
The editing in this clip is fast cuts when the opening seuqence is happening this makes the audience see the suspense building up to the main event in the clip being when he commits suicide. When the boy is dies the edits go into fades representing the slow and emotional feelings in the cuts, it also sets an eerie and builds a lot of tension.

When the police report goes into the cabinet the camera zooms into the name and the word 'suicide' creating a sympathetic feel and makes the audience curious of whether it really was a suicide as the police go on to talk about how it may have been a murder, the whole time they are talking the camera is zoomed in on them representing close ups and the importance of the scene.

Overall i believe this short clip from Cold Case signifies stereotypes and how people now days are heavily influenced by the media and resources around us, many people’s lives resolve around this and can sometimes take it a step to far.

Tv Drama, Representation of Gender.

Tv Drama, Representation of Gender.
I have analysed this clip on the representational issue gender, the clip starts with very calm mellow music to set the scene in a rural woodland scene, we then cut to the scene where a young adult abbey being a women and driving a digger, this can be seen as signifying a gender switch over as normally a man would drive the digger, this isn’t only a switch over, this also represents how women now days are able to do a man’s job. By this scene the music has evolved to a more dramatic, eerie mood foreshadowing the upcoming body that has been found, all goes silent when the hand is scene buried beneath the mud representing the shock and sympathy for whoever it is, whilst the music cuts off we hear a roar from the distance, in this part of the scene a large tiger like animal attacks the man dominating him and making him seem small, where’as abbey helps the man by repeatedly hitting the tiger making her the more masculine dominating character reminding us of the whole gender stereotypes.
